Residence permits and immigration in Spain

Spanish residence permits: Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), non-lucrative visa, work, family and renewals. I assess citizenship, current residence and documents to identify an appropriate route, whether you are already in Spain or planning a move from Russia, Latin America, North America, the UK or the UAE.

Which documents are reviewed

For an initial assessment I review your passport, current residence status, income or financial means, health insurance, criminal record certificates and family documents where applicable. The exact list depends on the type of residence permit and the country issuing each document.

What affects the timing

Timing depends on how complete your documents are, appointment availability and the competent authority. A statutory decision period is not a guaranteed date; suspensions and backlogs are assessed individually in each case.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about residence in Spain

How do I apply for Spanish residency from Russia, Latin America or North America?+

Start by separating citizenship from your current country of residence, then assess work, financial means and family circumstances. A consular application requires checking the Spanish consulate responsible for your home address and its current checklist. For documents issued in Russia, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, the USA or Canada, the issuing country determines apostille, legalisation and sworn Spanish translation requirements. There is no single checklist for an entire region.

Can I apply for Spanish residence while living in England or the UAE?+

Living in England, elsewhere in the UK or in the United Arab Emirates does not by itself establish eligibility for Spanish residence. Your passport, local residence permit, consular district and chosen Spanish authorisation must be assessed separately. UK or UAE residence does not replace Spain’s entry or residence requirements.

What changes if I am already in Spain?+

It depends on the route and your lawful status. International teleworker residence can be requested through UGE while lawfully in Spain, subject to the other requirements. Do not assume this applies to every route: an initial non-lucrative application includes a visa application at the competent consulate. A NIE number, municipal registration or a tourist visit does not itself grant residence or work rights.

Which residence routes are available in Spain?+

The main ones: employment and self-employment, international teleworker (digital nomad) residence, permits for highly qualified professionals and entrepreneurs, non-lucrative residence, studies, family-based routes (family reunification and residence as a family member of a Spanish or EU citizen), arraigo and long-term residence. The right route depends on nationality, the purpose of stay, financial means and family composition.

Can I work with a non-lucrative residence permit?+

No. Non-lucrative residence means living in Spain without carrying out work activity. If you plan to work, a route that allows employment should be considered.

What is assessed in a digital nomad application?+

First the nature of the activity — working remotely for a company or clients located outside Spain — and then qualifications and experience, income level, and the documentation of the employer or clients: contracts, collaboration terms and proof of payments.

What determines processing times?+

The type of application, where it is filed (a consulate or the Oficina de Extranjería / UGE), how complete and correct the documents are, and the workload of the authority. Timelines differ from case to case, so I don't promise a specific date.

What if my application is refused?+

Several options are usually available: fixing the issues if the file was incomplete, filing an administrative appeal, or going to court. The choice depends on the type of decision received and the deadlines that must be met.

Can I assess my options on my own?+

Yes — the site offers a quiz showing which routes may fit and which documents should be checked. The result is preliminary and does not replace a legal review of your documents.
